A week after meeting the doctor at dinner, we came in to get spinal X-rays. Shortly after, we met her at her office to go over the results.

Spoiler alert: our X-rays were jarring. My husband’s neck was several inches to the right from the plywood hitting him on the head and my back was essentially straight when it should have 3 distinct curves.

And it was then that I had a lot of questions:

How did this happen? How could 2, 26-year old’s have the spinal curvature of grandparents?

Why didn’t a single specialist we saw for the concussion think to take an X-ray of Ross’ neck?

Why am I just now finding out about this?

But more importantly,

What can we do to fix it?

Something in me trusted this doctor more than I’ve trusted any doctor in my life. I’ve seen more specialists than I can count and I had seen Ross go through many doctors with his concussion. I didn’t know why, but I knew both of us would benefit from seeing her.

We committed to the process and took part in personalized corrective plans. This included a lot of home exercises, several chiropractic adjustments each week, and a slow but steady beginning of the healing process. We did exactly what she said and we followed through with consistency. Ross’ thoughts became clearer. My posture became better. Both of our migraines disappeared. My lifelong allergies waned. Ross’ memory improved. My carpal tunnel and arthritis disappeared. And both of us just genuinely felt happier, more energized, and less anxious.

After only 2 months, Ross no longer had any concussion symptoms. This alone was a miracle. After 4 months, I was able to come off of 4 medications that I needed previously just to get through my daily pains of ulcerative colitis, arthritis, allergies, migraines, and anxiety. The best day of my life was dumping these expensive prescription bottles in the Freedom from Medicine box.

I was not 100% symptom free, but I didn’t need these pills to get through my daily life anymore. I was most excited about dumping the immunosuppresants and working on building back my immune system. I no longer needed the $500+ per month medications as a crutch for my symptoms. As a 26-year-old who previously relied on these to barely get by, I was ecstatic. As discussed in my inaugural post, not too long before finding our chiropractor I was being told I would soon need to rely on stronger medications just to get by. And now I was free from them. And even better, Ross was no longer suffering from concussion symptoms on a daily basis and he was back to his normal self. In some ways, it felt like his work accident never happened.

Chiropractic opened the door for us into holistic health and real healing. I can’t thank Dr. Kristine Schmierer at Inspire Family Chiropractic (a MaxLiving Chiropractor) enough for instilling in us the idea that the human body was made to heal. The day I dumped my medications, I told myself that I wouldn’t be living my life with these thoughts of sickness, disease, and cancer anymore. I would be living them with health and vitality. All doctors before this point gave us a diagnosis, a life sentence, and the odds we were up against. How refreshing to have a doctor who believes in you and your body’s capabilities.

The process isn’t easy. But when given the right tools, we can heal ourselves.

Chiropractic was certainly not the only thing we committed to doing (or else I wouldn’t have a blog, right?) and it certainly was not a “fix-all”. However, it was the most fundamental key to healing that was missing from our lives. They say everything happens for a reason…for some reason it took a traumatic brain injury for us to be open minded enough to find this path of healing.

Dr. Kristine and her team embody this principle of healing and prove it everyday in the office. True health and healing is in each of us.
